Türkiye is a major trading partner of the EU, a large tourism destination and a manufacturing hub, so lira rates show up in travel, e-commerce, logistics and payroll systems. Over fxapi’s history the lira has lost most of its value against the dollar and the euro, with several crisis episodes along the way. That makes the TRY exchange rate API a case where update frequency, timestamps and history really matter.
TRY facts for developers
- Where it’s used: Türkiye and Northern Cyprus.
- Symbol and formatting:
₺, introduced in 2012 (TLis also common). Turkish formatting uses a period as thousands separator and a comma as decimal separator:₺1.234,56. - Minor unit: 2 decimals (kuruş).
- Central bank: the Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye (CBRT).
- Regime: officially floating since February 2001, when Turkey abandoned its crawling peg during a banking crisis.
- Redenomination: on 1 January 2005, six zeros were removed and the ISO code changed from TRL to TRY. The “new Turkish lira” name was dropped again in 2009.
- Events in the historical data: in August 2018 the lira fell sharply amid a diplomatic dispute with the US and concerns about inflation – 10 August 2018 is the sample date on this page. It depreciated steeply again in late 2021 and continued to weaken in the following years amid high inflation.
Get TRY rates with the fxapi API
/v1/historical works on every plan. This Ruby script prints the USD/TRY rate at the start of each year, which makes the long-term trend obvious at a glance:
require "net/http"
require "json"
def usd_try(date)
uri = URI("https://api.fxapi.com/v1/historical")
uri.query = URI.encode_www_form(date: date, currencies: "TRY")
req = Net::HTTP::Get.new(uri)
req["apikey"] = ENV.fetch("FXAPI_KEY")
res = Net::HTTP.start(uri.host, uri.port, use_ssl: true) { |http| http.request(req) }
raise "fxapi returned #{res.code} for #{date}" unless res.is_a?(Net::HTTPSuccess)
JSON.parse(res.body).dig("data", "TRY", "value")
end
previous = nil
(2018..2026).each do |year|
rate = usd_try("#{year}-01-02")
change = previous ? format("%+.1f%%", (rate / previous - 1) * 100) : ""
puts format("%d USD/TRY %8.4f %s", year, rate, change)
previous = rate
end
Each date is one request. For a single start-to-end comparison, the free fluctuation endpoint is cheaper. More: real-time exchange rate API, Ruby guide.
Things to watch
- Store the timestamp. Save
meta.last_updated_atwith every converted price or transaction – a few hours can matter for TRY. - Refresh more often. Prices in lira go stale faster than prices in pegged currencies; size your cache accordingly.
- Pre-2005 scale. Check how old values are scaled before mixing them with post-2005 data.

/v1/latest?currencies=TRY with your key in the apikey header. With USD as the default base, the value is lira per 1 US dollar. Check meta.last_updated_at to see how fresh it is.
