Singapore is a regional hub for treasury centers, trading companies and APAC headquarters, so the Singapore dollar often sits at the center of multi-currency reporting for South-East Asia. Its monetary policy is unusual: instead of an interest rate, the central bank steers the exchange rate itself. The fxapi SGD exchange rate API returns Singapore dollar rates against 190+ currencies, including regional pairs such as SGD/MYR and SGD/IDR.

SGD facts for developers

  • Where it’s used: Singapore. The Brunei dollar (BND) is interchangeable with the Singapore dollar at par under a 1967 agreement, and both circulate in Brunei and Singapore.
  • Symbol and formatting: $, written S$ or SGD internationally. Format: S$1,234.56.
  • Minor unit: 2 decimals (cents).
  • Central bank: the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).
  • Regime: a managed float. MAS uses the exchange rate as its main monetary policy tool, guiding the trade-weighted Singapore dollar (S$NEER) within an undisclosed policy band defined by its slope, width and center.
  • Events in the historical data: on 30 March 2020 – the sample date on this page – MAS set the slope of the policy band to zero and re-centered the band lower, an easing move at the start of the pandemic.

For trend charts and dashboards, weekly data is often enough and keeps payloads small. /v1/range with accuracy=week (Professional plan and up) returns the week-end daily rate for each week. This Python script loads two years of weekly SGD rates into a dictionary keyed by currency:

import csv
import io
import os
from collections import defaultdict

import requests

params = {
    "base_currency": "SGD",
    "currencies": "MYR,IDR,USD",
    "datetime_start": "2024-10-01T00:00:00Z",
    "datetime_end": "2026-09-30T23:59:59Z",
    "accuracy": "week",
    "format": "csv",
}
r = requests.get(
    "https://api.fxapi.com/v1/range",
    params=params,
    headers={"apikey": os.environ["FXAPI_KEY"]},
    timeout=20,
)
r.raise_for_status()

series = defaultdict(list)
for row in csv.DictReader(io.StringIO(r.text)):
    series[row["currency"]].append((row["datetime"][:10], float(row["value"])))

for code, points in series.items():
    first, last = points[0][1], points[-1][1]
    print(f"SGD/{code}: {len(points)} weeks, {first:.4f} -> {last:.4f}")

Feed the series straight into a BI tool – see business intelligence and analytics and the time series API. The Python guide shows a pandas version. On the Free plan, monthly averages from the average exchange rates API are a lighter alternative for trend reporting. For another managed regional currency, compare the Hong Kong dollar.

Things to watch

  • IDR scale. One Singapore dollar buys thousands of rupiah; store rates as decimals with enough precision, not as fixed 4-decimal values.
  • Policy statements move the SGD. MAS policy decisions can shift the trade-weighted rate on the day they are published.
  • Same $ sign. Label prices S$ to avoid confusion with US or Australian dollars.
