Sweden is home to many export-heavy companies, and their annual reports translate euro, dollar and Nordic revenue into kronor – or kronor into a euro or dollar presentation currency. The krona floats freely and can move noticeably against the euro, so the choice between closing and average rates matters. The fxapi SEK exchange rate API delivers both, with history back to 1999.
SEK facts for developers
- Where it’s used: Sweden.
- Symbol and formatting:
krafter the amount, a space as thousands separator and a comma as decimal separator:1 234,56 kr. Norway, Denmark and Iceland also use “kr”, so showSEKin multi-currency views. - Minor unit: 2 decimals (öre). The last öre coin was withdrawn in 2010, so cash totals are rounded to whole kronor.
- Central bank: Sveriges Riksbank, founded in 1668 and often cited as the world’s oldest central bank.
- Regime: free float. Sweden joined the EU in 1995 but voters rejected the euro in a referendum on 14 September 2003; the sample date on this page is the following day.
- Events in the historical data: the Riksbank held a negative repo rate from 2015 to 2019. The krona has also been sensitive to risk-off episodes such as 2008 and March 2020, when it weakened against the euro and the dollar. Because Sweden kept its own currency, every euro-area customer or supplier adds real FX exposure – which is why many Swedish groups report both closing and average EUR/SEK rates.

/v1/average (all plans, 1 request) computes the averages for you. This Go program requests yearly SEK averages as CSV and prints one line per year and currency:
package main
import (
"encoding/csv"
"fmt"
"log"
"net/http"
"net/url"
"os"
)
func main() {
q := url.Values{}
q.Set("base_currency", "SEK")
q.Set("currencies", "EUR,USD,NOK")
q.Set("date_from", "2021-01-01")
q.Set("date_to", "2025-12-31")
q.Set("period", "year")
q.Set("format", "csv")
req, err := http.NewRequest("GET", "https://api.fxapi.com/v1/average?"+q.Encode(), nil)
if err != nil {
log.Fatal(err)
}
req.Header.Set("apikey", os.Getenv("FXAPI_KEY"))
resp, err := http.DefaultClient.Do(req)
if err != nil {
log.Fatal(err)
}
defer resp.Body.Close()
if resp.StatusCode != http.StatusOK {
log.Fatalf("fxapi returned %s", resp.Status)
}
rows, err := csv.NewReader(resp.Body).ReadAll()
if err != nil {
log.Fatal(err)
}
// columns: period,date_from,date_to,days,source,base_currency,currency,average,min,max
for _, r := range rows[1:] {
fmt.Printf("%s SEK/%s avg %s min %s max %s\n", r[0], r[6], r[7], r[8], r[9])
}
}
Use period=month or quarter for interim reports. Background: closing vs average rates, the average exchange rates API and the Go guide. For the neighbors, see the Norwegian krone.
Things to watch
- “kr” is ambiguous across SEK, NOK, DKK and ISK – always store the ISO code.
- Locale formatting.
sv-SEuses a (non-breaking) space for thousands and a comma for decimals; don’t parse those strings back into numbers. - Cash rounding to whole kronor applies only to cash payments.
