Norway’s economy is closely tied to oil and gas, and the krone often moves with energy prices and global risk appetite. For Norwegian exporters, shipping companies and anyone paying Norwegian salaries, that makes EUR/NOK and USD/NOK worth monitoring closely. The fxapi NOK exchange rate API returns live krone rates and daily history back to 1999, so you can analyze those swings rather than guess at them.
NOK facts for developers
- Where it’s used: Norway, including Svalbard and Jan Mayen.
- Symbol and formatting:
kr, with a space as thousands separator and a comma as decimal separator – for example1 234,56 kr(placingkrbefore the amount is also common). Sweden, Denmark and Iceland also use “kr”, so showNOKin multi-currency contexts. - Minor unit: 2 decimals (øre). Since the 50-øre coin was withdrawn in 2012, cash totals are rounded to whole kroner.
- Central bank: Norges Bank, which also manages Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global.
- Regime: free float with an inflation target since 2001.
- Events in the historical data: the krone weakened considerably during the 2014–2016 oil price slump. In March 2020 – the sample date on this page is 19 March – it fell steeply against the euro and the dollar as oil prices and risk assets collapsed at the same time.

To study a volatile period day by day, use /v1/range with accuracy=day (Professional plan and up). This Ruby script downloads EUR/NOK for March 2020 as CSV and reports the weakest day for the krone:
require "net/http"
require "csv"
uri = URI("https://api.fxapi.com/v1/range")
uri.query = URI.encode_www_form(
base_currency: "EUR",
currencies: "NOK",
datetime_start: "2020-03-01T00:00:00Z",
datetime_end: "2020-03-31T23:59:59Z",
accuracy: "day",
format: "csv"
)
req = Net::HTTP::Get.new(uri)
req["apikey"] = ENV.fetch("FXAPI_KEY")
res = Net::HTTP.start(uri.host, uri.port, use_ssl: true) { |http| http.request(req) }
raise "fxapi returned #{res.code}" unless res.is_a?(Net::HTTPSuccess)
rows = CSV.parse(res.body, headers: true)
peak = rows.max_by { |r| r["value"].to_f }
puts "Days: #{rows.size}"
puts "Weakest krone: #{peak['datetime'][0, 10]} at #{peak['value']} NOK per EUR"
On the Free plan, the fluctuation endpoint gives start rate, end rate and percentage change for the same window in one call. More: time series API, Ruby guide, and the neighboring Swedish krona.
Things to watch
- Higher EUR/NOK means a weaker krone. Label charts clearly – the direction confuses many dashboards.
- Refresh frequency. In volatile markets an hourly or 60-second plan keeps displayed prices closer to the market than daily updates.
- “kr” collisions with SEK, DKK and ISK – store the ISO code with every amount.
