Hungarian forint (HUF) exchange rate API

The forint is the currency of Hungary, an export-oriented EU economy with a large automotive and electronics sector, and it is one of the more volatile currencies in Central Europe. Its decimals are a classic source of bugs: ISO says two, everyday life says none. HUF facts for developers

• Where it’s used: Hungary.
• Symbol and formatting: Ft after the amount, a space as thousands separator and a comma as decimal separator: 12 345 Ft or 12 345,67 Ft.
• Minor unit: 2 decimals per ISO 4217 (fillér), but no fillér coins circulate. The 1- and 2-forint coins were withdrawn in 2008, so cash totals are rounded to the nearest 5 forints.
• Central bank: Magyar Nemzeti Bank (MNB), the central bank of Hungary.
• Regime: free float. From 2001 the forint traded within a ±15% band around a central parity against the euro; the MNB and the government abandoned the band in February 2008 (the sample date on this page is 26 February 2008). Hungary joined the EU in 2004 but has not adopted the euro.
• Events in the historical data: the forint weakened sharply during the 2008–2009 crisis and again in 2022, when Hungary faced high inflation.

Things to watch

• ISO vs practice. Payment providers differ – some require HUF amounts with 2 decimals, others accept or expect whole forints. Check your provider’s documentation.
• Cash rounding to 5 Ft applies only to cash payments.
• Volatility. The forint can move several percent in a short period; refresh cached rates more often than for pegged currencies.
