The euro is the second most widely held reserve currency after the US dollar and one side of the most traded currency pair, EUR/USD. For European businesses it is usually the functional currency, which makes base_currency=EUR the natural setting for pricing, invoicing and month-end translation. The fxapi EUR exchange rate API covers the euro from its first day: daily data starts on 1999-01-01, the day the euro replaced eleven national currencies as book money.
EUR facts for developers
- Where it’s used: the euro area – Bulgaria became the latest member on 1 January 2026 – plus Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City by agreement with the EU, and Montenegro and Kosovo unilaterally.
- Symbol and formatting:
€, but its position depends on the locale:1.234,56 €in Germany,1 234,56 €in France,€1,234.56in Ireland. Format with the user’s locale, not the currency. - Minor unit: 2 decimals (cents).
- Central bank: the European Central Bank sets monetary policy for the euro area together with the national central banks of the Eurosystem.
- Linked currencies: the Danish krone is held close to the euro in ERM II, and several non-EU currencies are pegged to it.
- Events in the historical data: euro banknotes and coins arrived on 1 January 2002; the sovereign debt crisis weighed on the euro from 2010; in July 2022 EUR/USD fell below parity for the first time in about two decades. Latvia (2014), Lithuania (2015) and Croatia (2023) adopted the euro – fxapi keeps their old codes LVL, LTL and HRK for history (see redenominations and code changes).
Get EUR rates with the fxapi API
/v1/latest and /v1/historical work on every plan. This JavaScript snippet (Node 18+, ES module) compares euro rates on the first trading day, 1999-01-04, with today:
const API = "https://api.fxapi.com/v1";
const headers = { apikey: process.env.FXAPI_KEY };
async function eurRates(path, extra = {}) {
const qs = new URLSearchParams({ base_currency: "EUR", currencies: "USD,GBP,CHF,JPY", ...extra });
const res = await fetch(`${API}/${path}?${qs}`, { headers });
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`fxapi ${res.status}`);
return (await res.json()).data;
}
const launch = await eurRates("historical", { date: "1999-01-04" });
const today = await eurRates("latest");
for (const code of Object.keys(today)) {
const change = (today[code].value / launch[code].value - 1) * 100;
console.log(`EUR/${code}: ${launch[code].value.toFixed(4)} -> ${today[code].value.toFixed(4)} (${change.toFixed(1)}%)`);
}
For full daily series use /v1/range (Professional plan and up) – see the exchange rate time series API. More examples are in the JavaScript guide.
Things to watch
- Locale ≠ currency. A German and an Irish customer both pay in euros but expect different number formats.
- Fixed legacy rates are exact. Never convert DEM, FRF or ITL amounts with a market rate – use the official conversion rate to six significant figures.
- Round per line or per total consistently. Pick one rule for VAT and invoice totals; currency rounding and precision shows both.
