Danish krone (DKK) exchange rate API

Danish krone rates against 190+ currencies – live and historical back to 1999. The krone is held close to the euro in ERM II (central rate 7.46038), so DKK moves almost one-for-one with EUR.

Denmark is an EU member that kept its own currency but ties it closely to the euro. For a Danish business this makes EUR/DKK almost a constant, while USD/DKK, GBP/DKK or SEK/DKK move just like the corresponding euro pairs. The fxapi DKK exchange rate API returns all of them, and its history from 1999 covers the full ERM II period.

DKK facts for developers

  • Where it’s used: Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands (which issue their own krónur notes at par, without a separate ISO code).
  • Symbol and formatting: kr. after the amount, a period as thousands separator and a comma as decimal separator: 1.234,50 kr.. Show DKK where Swedish or Norwegian kronor could be meant.
  • Minor unit: 2 decimals (øre). The smallest coin is 50 øre, so cash totals are rounded to the nearest 50 øre.
  • Central bank: Danmarks Nationalbank.
  • Regime: fixed exchange rate policy. Denmark has participated in ERM II since 1 January 1999 with a central rate of 7.46038 DKK per EUR and a ±2.25% band – narrower than the standard ±15%.
  • Events in the historical data: Danish voters rejected the euro in a referendum on 28 September 2000. In early 2015, after the Swiss National Bank dropped its franc floor, the krone came under upward pressure and Danmarks Nationalbank cut its rates several times, reaching −0.75% in February 2015 (sample date on this page: 5 February 2015).

/v1/average (all plans) returns the average, min and max per period – enough to check how far EUR/DKK strayed from the central rate. This Python script measures the monthly deviation for 2015:

import csv
import io
import os

import requests

CENTRAL_RATE = 7.46038 # DKK per EUR in ERM II

params = {
    "base_currency": "EUR",
    "currencies": "DKK",
    "date_from": "2015-01-01",
    "date_to": "2015-12-31",
    "period": "month",
    "format": "csv",
}
r = requests.get(
    "https://api.fxapi.com/v1/average",
    params=params,
    headers={"apikey": os.environ["FXAPI_KEY"]},
    timeout=15,
)
r.raise_for_status()

for row in csv.DictReader(io.StringIO(r.text)):
    lo, hi = float(row["min"]), float(row["max"])
    worst = max(abs(lo / CENTRAL_RATE - 1), abs(hi / CENTRAL_RATE - 1)) * 100
    print(f"{row['period']}: min {lo:.5f}  max {hi:.5f}  max deviation {worst:.3f}%")

See the average exchange rates API for the parameters and the Python guide for caching. The other Nordic currencies – the Swedish krona and Norwegian krone – float freely.

Things to watch

  • Don’t hard-code 7.46. The peg is tight, not fixed to the decimal; always use the live or historical rate.
  • USD/DKK is not stable. Only EUR/DKK is managed – every other pair moves with the euro.
  • Cash rounding to 50 øre applies only to cash payments.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get the EUR to DKK exchange rate via API?
Call /v1/latest?base_currency=EUR&currencies=DKK with your key in the apikey header. The value is kroner per 1 euro and stays close to 7.46.
Is the Danish krone pegged to the euro?
Yes. Denmark has been in ERM II since 1 January 1999 with a central rate of 7.46038 DKK per euro and a ±2.25% fluctuation band. In practice Danmarks Nationalbank keeps the rate much closer to the central rate.
Does fxapi have krone rates before 1999?
No. Daily data starts on 1999-01-01 – the same day Denmark’s ERM II participation began.
Are Faroese and Greenlandic currencies supported?
Greenland uses the Danish krone. Faroese krónur notes are a local issue at par with DKK and have no separate ISO code, so use DKK.
