The Australian dollar is one of the most traded currencies globally and is closely watched as a proxy for commodity prices and Asia-Pacific growth, given Australia’s role as an exporter of iron ore, coal and gas. For Australian online stores and SaaS companies the practical questions are simpler: what is a A$ price worth in US, New Zealand or Singapore dollars right now, and what was it on the invoice date? The fxapi AUD exchange rate API answers both.

AUD facts for developers

  • Where it’s used: Australia and its external territories (Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Norfolk Island), as well as Kiribati, Nauru and Tuvalu.
  • Symbol and formatting: $, written A$ or AU$ when other dollars could be meant. Format: $1,234.56.
  • Minor unit: 2 decimals (cents). Cash totals are rounded to 5 cents because 1- and 2-cent coins were withdrawn in 1992.
  • Central bank: the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA).
  • Regime: free float since 1983.
  • Events in the historical data: the AUD fell steeply during the 2008 financial crisis and again in March 2020. On 19 March 2020 – the sample date on this page – the RBA cut its cash rate to 0.25% and announced government bond purchases.

/v1/convert (Basic plan and up) returns converted amounts, which is convenient for price lists. This JavaScript snippet converts a A$149.95 product price and formats each result with Intl.NumberFormat, which also applies the right number of decimals per currency (0 for JPY):

const qs = new URLSearchParams({
  base_currency: "AUD",
  currencies: "USD,NZD,SGD,JPY",
  value: "149.95",
});

const res = await fetch(`https://api.fxapi.com/v1/convert?${qs}`, {
  headers: { apikey: process.env.FXAPI_KEY },
});
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`fxapi ${res.status}`);
const { data } = await res.json();

for (const [code, { value }] of Object.entries(data)) {
  const price = new Intl.NumberFormat("en-AU", { style: "currency", currency: code }).format(value);
  console.log(`A$149.95 ≈ ${price}`);
}

On the Free plan, fetch /v1/latest and multiply yourself. Cache the result – see caching exchange rates – and read the JavaScript guide for a full integration. For storefront strategy see multi-currency pricing; the closest neighbor currency is the New Zealand dollar.

Things to watch

  • Display vs charge. Converted prices shown to visitors are indicative; lock the rate when the order is placed and store it with the order.
  • Volatility in risk-off periods. The AUD can move several percent in days during market stress – refresh cached rates accordingly.
  • Cash rounding applies only to cash payments, not to invoices or card totals.
