The UAE is a regional hub for trade, aviation, tourism and remittances, and its dirham is pegged to the US dollar. That combination shapes how developers should think about AED rates: AED/USD is effectively fixed, but rates such as AED/INR, AED/PKR, AED/EUR or AED/GBP move every day, exactly in step with the dollar. The fxapi AED exchange rate API returns all of them, live and back to 1999. Typical uses are remittance apps quoting dirham-to-rupee transfers, travel platforms pricing stays for European visitors, and finance teams consolidating UAE subsidiaries.
AED facts for developers
- Where it’s used: the United Arab Emirates.
- Symbol and formatting:
د.إin Arabic;AEDorDhsin English-language contexts, e.g.AED 1,234.50. In 2025 the central bank introduced a new official dirham symbol, which older fonts and systems may not render yet. - Minor unit: 2 decimals (fils).
- Central bank: the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE).
- Regime: a conventional peg to the US dollar at 3.6725 AED per USD, like most Gulf currencies (see the Saudi riyal at 3.75).
- Events in the historical data: the peg held through the 2008 financial crisis, the 2014–2016 oil price collapse and the 2020 pandemic shock. On 20 April 2020 – the sample date on this page – US oil futures settled below zero for the first time, yet AED/USD stayed at the peg while AED/INR and AED/EUR moved with the dollar.
Get AED rates with the fxapi API
/v1/latest works on every plan. This Go program fetches dirham rates for the main remittance corridors and checks how close AED/USD is to the official peg:
package main
import (
"encoding/json"
"fmt"
"log"
"math"
"net/http"
"os"
)
const officialPeg = 3.6725 // AED per USD
func main() {
req, err := http.NewRequest("GET",
"https://api.fxapi.com/v1/latest?base_currency=AED¤cies=USD,INR,PKR,EUR", nil)
if err != nil {
log.Fatal(err)
}
req.Header.Set("apikey", os.Getenv("FXAPI_KEY"))
resp, err := http.DefaultClient.Do(req)
if err != nil {
log.Fatal(err)
}
defer resp.Body.Close()
if resp.StatusCode != http.StatusOK {
log.Fatalf("fxapi returned %s", resp.Status)
}
var out struct {
Data map[string]struct {
Value float64 `json:"value"`
} `json:"data"`
}
if err := json.NewDecoder(resp.Body).Decode(&out); err != nil {
log.Fatal(err)
}
aedPerUSD := 1 / out.Data["USD"].Value
deviation := math.Abs(aedPerUSD/officialPeg-1) * 100
fmt.Printf("USD/AED %.4f (peg %.4f, deviation %.3f%%)\n", aedPerUSD, officialPeg, deviation)
for _, code := range []string{"INR", "PKR", "EUR"} {
fmt.Printf("AED 1,000 = %.2f %s\n", 1000*out.Data[code].Value, code)
}
}

Things to watch
- Don’t hard-code 3.6725 for conversions. Use the market rate you fetched and store it with the transaction; use the peg only as a sanity check.
- Non-USD pairs are not stable. AED/EUR and AED/INR move as much as USD/EUR and USD/INR.
- Right-to-left text.
د.إis Arabic script; test layouts that mix it with Latin digits.
